Dearborn Academy’s Howard Rossman 2019 Speaker Series celebrates the varied ways in which students learn. The three-part series, free to the public, begins with Understanding & Treating Anxiety in Children, a presentation by Drs. Sabrina Popp & Xenia Bembe Johnson on mental health in adolescents and the use of medications in treatment. Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller will kick off the evening and Dearborn Academy’s yearlong 70th Anniversary celebration.
The lecture and discussion series is designed to help families, educators, advocates and others understand how to help young people who learn differently build strategies to achieve academic and social success. Dearborn Academy students have complex learning, emotional and behavioral needs and work intensively with the school's faculty and staff to achieve educational and social success.
Other presentations include a viewing of Angst: A Movie of Hope with Dr. Robert Brooks, Tuesday, March 26, 2019, about the effects of anxiety on young people and how we can help them. Slow Brain Processing in a Warp-Drive World with Dr. Ellen Braaten, Thursday, May 9, 2019, will explore how difficulties with processing speed cut across disorders such as learning disabilities and ADHD.
